After nearly 30 years of collaboration with Annegret Soltau, we are delighted that her radical pioneering work—addressing sensitive issues surrounding womanhood—is finally receiving the attention that the art world often denied at the time of its creation.
The exhibition presents works from the 1970s. As a master of etching, Annegret Soltau produced numerous prints in the early phase of her career, experimenting with a wide range of techniques in the treatment of printing plates. Her dominant themes included emotional states and physical conditions, connection and fragmentation, solitude, motherhood, and death. In the 1970s, she transferred the techniques she had previously applied to etching into photography, developing the method of photo etching.
By making herself and her own body both the object and the subject of her art, she found a way to express her inner states with even greater immediacy. The exhibition *On the Etch* offers insight into this early and still little-known phase of the artist’s development.
